This recent update by the Union of Concerned Scientists shows just how efficient new EVs are regardless of where you are on the national grid. Even on Oahu, where I believe diesel is predominantly used for electricity, one would need a gas car that gets ~47 mpg to best the efficiency of the newest EVs.
